The Perfect Profile

dominantWindow light with subtle flash fill.  If you want to shoot a profile, this is the way to do it.  Here’s how it’s done: The window is forward and to her right at about a 45 degree angle (look at the direction).

The light is fully illuminating the side facing away from the camera. Notice how it spills over to her left cheek and rim lights her nose?

Take a meter reading of her face from her opposite side and give about one extra stop exposure. Lock that reading in, making sure your shutter speed is at flash sync speed.

Recompose and set your on-camera flash to a -2 or -3 factor.

This technique is wonderful for women when in a pensive pose and super-excellent for men with strong dignified profiles, especially if they have a beard.

Now you are a master profile shooter.
