The Sound Of The Hound
One summer afternoon, while sipping a cappuccino at a café in the tony Yorkville section of Toronto, I heard a number of exotic cars tooling by. I observed this road show for a while, and more and more hyper cool exotics seemed to roll by. I decided to take a few snapshots of some of these colourful, and sometimes very very loud, Street Beasts.
Some of these beauties would even circle back for a second or third go-round! It reminded me of a fashion show, not of two legged “fasionistas” but of four-pawed metal, fiberglass, aluminum and/or carbon-fiber short haul scorpions, tooling down my imaginary Yorkville concourse.
In any case, I resolved to return on another sunny day for another cappuccino, and again, more of these pavement panthers snorted by. My Yorkville coffee-break turned out to be a project that I’ve indulged in on many a sunny afternoon.
While most of these extravagant steeds of the well-heeled are owned by auto enthusiasts, a friend recently suggested another, humorous, point-of-view; that some of these exotics are actually rented by the day or even the hour, by millennial guys who want to appear cool and rich, as a means to attract and/or pick up millennial-gals. My friend calls these wanna-be guy-rental-drivers “multi-million dollar credit card moguls” who secretly live in the basement of their parent’s home.
Now, after a plethora of cappuccinos at my Yorkville perch, I’ve recorded hundreds and hundreds of exotic cars: Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, Maseratis, Corvettes, McLarens, Jaguars, Porsches, Mercedes-Benzs, Alfa Romeos, Rolls Royces, Bentleys, a custom built, unrecognizable, snarling, ground crawling four-wheel predators… and even a few perfectly coiffed classic North American oldies.
So, if you’re ever in Yorkville and see a guy with a coffee and a camera, grab a cappuccino and join me for an exotic Street Beast show.
